The traditional-style stone buildings of Mala Lodge huddle in the Annapurna lowlands amongst rice terraces, near to a quaint bee-keeping village. Getting here is an hour’s drive from Pokhara to Lumle, followed by a ninety minutes hike on a winding trail through a picturesque forest, past rice terraces and perfect panoramas.
Eighteen spanking new rooms boast super comfortable twin beds, slate floors, rafted ceilings, and spacious bathrooms with hot showers and pampering amenities.
This quiet and serene place set among tranquil gardens and paved terraces feels like a sanctuary, protected by looming Machapuchare, the Fishtail Mountain. It is not part of the regular trekking circuit (although only 2km from Gurung Lodge, you can request it as an alternative rest stop). But with its well-appointed rooms, great food program, wonderful staff and many local day-hikes and adventures, Mala is a perfect Annapurna getaway, be it for a single night or a week.
As well as the great dining on offer at Mala Lodge, one of the programs available here is engaging with the community with a meal at the house of a local villager. Let your team know in advance if you’re interested. Your guide will translate as you get to befriend and break bread with a Gurung family, learn how they live, work, eat, and play.
